Zineryt

Zineryt is a prescription-only topical solution containing erythromycin (a macrolide antibiotic) and zinc acetate. The combination has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects against acne vulgaris.

The added zinc offers a twofold benefit: it enhances the antibacterial effect of erythromycin and itself has anti-inflammatory and sebostatic (sebum-production-inhibiting) properties. In addition, zinc can delay the development of resistance to erythromycin.

Zineryt is supplied as powder and solvent, which are mixed before the first use. The ready-to-use solution is applied 2x daily.

Erythromycin and zinc work synergistically:

Erythromycin:

• Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis (50S ribosome)
• Bacteriostatic against Cutibacterium acnes
• Reduces the inflammatory response

Zinc acetate:

• Enhances the antibacterial effect
• Inhibits 5-alpha reductase (less sebum production)
• Anti-inflammatory
• Promotes wound healing
• Reduces the development of resistance to erythromycin

Zineryt is suitable for:

• Mild to moderate acne vulgaris
• Inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne
• Adults and adolescents

Advantages:

• Well tolerated
• Non-greasy (solution)
• Added zinc reduces resistance

Not suitable:

• Severe cystic acne
• In cases of known erythromycin resistance

Zineryt solution:

• Apply to the affected skin areas 2x daily
• Morning and evening after cleansing
• Duration of treatment: 10-12 weeks

Preparation:

• Mix the powder and solvent before the first use
• The ready-to-use solution keeps for 12 weeks

First use: 1. Add the solvent to the powder 2. Shake well until dissolved 3. Attach the applicator

Daily use: 1. Cleanse and dry the skin 2. Apply the solution to the affected areas with the applicator 3. Allow it to absorb 4. 2x daily (morning and evening)

Important:

• Shake the bottle before use
• Avoid contact with the eyes
• Do not apply to open wounds

Do not use in case of:

• Hypersensitivity to erythromycin or zinc acetate
• Hypersensitivity to other macrolide antibiotics
• Hypersensitivity to any of the other ingredients (ethanol, diisopropyl sebacate)

Pregnancy: May be used if there is a strict medical indication.

Breastfeeding: Use is possible, but not in the breast area.

Common (1-10%):

• Burning or stinging on application
• Dry skin
• Mild redness

Uncommon:

• Scaling
• Itching

Rare:

• Contact dermatitis
• Allergic reactions

Note: Tolerability is generally very good.

Interactions:

• Clindamycin (topical) – antagonistic, do not combine
• Isotretinoin (oral) – can be combined

Useful combination:

• Benzoyl peroxide (applied at different times)
• Retinoids (applied at different times)
