What is Yaz?
Yaz is a combined birth control pill from Bayer containing the progestin drospirenone and a low dose of ethinylestradiol (0.02 mg). It differs from Yasmin in its lower estrogen dose and a different dosing schedule (24+4 instead of 21+7).
The 24+4 schedule (24 active tablets, 4 placebos) shortens the hormone-free interval.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Drospirenon 3 mg, Ethinylestradiol 0,02 mg
Yaz works like other drospirenone pills:
- Suppression of ovulation
- Thickening of the cervical mucus
- Antiandrogenic effect (against acne)
- Antimineralocorticoid effect (against water retention)
The 24+4 schedule keeps hormone levels more constant.
Who is it suitable for?
Yaz is approved for contraception (oral contraception) in women who:
- Have already had their first period (menarche)
- Have not yet reached menopause
Whether Yaz is right for you depends on your individual risk factors, especially for blood clots in the veins (venous thromboembolism).

- 4 white placebo tablets
- 28-day blister pack
How to Take
- One tablet daily without a break
- 24 hormone tablets, then 4 placebos
- Continue directly with the next blister pack
- Bleeding occurs during the placebo days
Contraindications
Do not use in cases of thrombosis risk, severe renal insufficiency, acute renal failure, liver disease, hormone-dependent tumors, pregnancy.
If you have impaired kidney function and potassium levels in the upper normal range, your potassium level should be checked during the first cycle of use, especially if you are also taking potassium-sparing medicines.

Common: headache, breast pain, mood swings Rare: thromboses, hyperkalemia
