Vagifem

Vagifem consists of small vaginal tablets that contain a very low dose of estradiol (10 µg). They are used for the local treatment of vaginal dryness and symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency after menopause.

The tablets come with a convenient applicator that makes insertion easier. Because of the low dose, systemic absorption is minimal.

Estradiol acts locally in the vagina:

• Regenerates the mucous membrane
• Improves blood flow
• Normalizes the pH level

Women with:

• Vaginal dryness
• Pain during sex
• Vaginal atrophy

• 10 µg estradiol per tablet
• Initial: 1x daily for 2 weeks
• Maintenance: 2x weekly

Insert deep into the vagina using the single-use applicator, preferably in the evening.

• Current, past or suspected breast cancer
• Current, past or suspected estrogen-dependent malignant tumors (e.g. endometrial cancer)
• Unexplained genital bleeding
• Untreated thickening of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
• Past or current venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
• Known tendency to form blood clots (thrombophilia, e.g. protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency)
• Current or past arterial thromboembolic disease (e.g. angina pectoris, heart attack)
• Acute liver disease, or past liver disease as long as liver function tests have not returned to normal
• Hypersensitivity to estradiol or any of the other ingredients
• Porphyria

Local irritation, discharge, rarely breast tenderness.
