What is Estring?
Estring is a flexible vaginal ring that continuously releases a low dose of estradiol. It is inserted once and remains in the vagina for 90 days – no daily application needed.
The ring releases approx. 7.5 µg of estradiol per day – enough for a local effect, but with minimal systemic absorption.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Estradiol 2 mg (Freisetzung ca. 7,5 µg/Tag)
Continuous low-dose release of estradiol directly in the vagina to treat vaginal atrophy.
Who is it suitable for?
Women with vaginal dryness who want a long-term, low-maintenance therapy.
Available Dosages
- 2 mg estradiol in the ring
- Release: approx. 7.5 µg/day over 90 days
How to Take
Insert the ring and leave it in place for 90 days. Then replace it with a new ring.
Contraindications
- Current or past breast cancer, or suspected breast cancer
- Estrogen-dependent malignant tumor, or a suspected one (especially endometrial cancer)
- Undiagnosed genital bleeding
- Untreated thickening of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
- Past or current venous thromboembolism (especially deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
- Known tendency to form blood clots (thrombophilia, e.g. protein C, protein S or antithrombin deficiency)
- Current or recent arterial thromboembolic disease (especially angina pectoris, heart attack)
- Acute liver disease, or past liver disease as long as liver values have not returned to normal
- Porphyria
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Hypersensitivity to estradiol or any of the other ingredients
Possible Side Effects
Very common:
- Vaginal discharge (leukorrhea)
Common:
- Discomfort or irritation in the vaginal area, genital itching
- Vaginal bleeding
- Vaginal inflammation (vaginitis), genital yeast infection
- Breast discomfort (breast swelling, breast enlargement, breast pain)
- Urinary tract infections, bladder discomfort
- Upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, flu-like symptoms
- Headache, hot flushes, sleeplessness
- Abdominal pain, nausea
- Itchy skin, increased sweating
- Joint disorders (joint pain, arthritis, osteoarthritis), back pain
Uncommon:
- Hypersensitivity reactions
Rare:
- Vaginal erosion or vaginal ulceration (sore)
- Ring sticking to the vaginal wall (vaginal adhesion), which can make removal difficult
If bleeding, spotting or signs of vaginal irritation occur during treatment, see your doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most women and their partners do not feel the ring. If needed, it can be removed temporarily (max. 3 hours).
