Kyleena

Kyleena is a hormonal IUD from Bayer that is positioned between Mirena and Jaydess. It has the small frame of Jaydess but a longer duration of action of 5 years.

The hormone dose lies between those of the other two IUDs.

Local action through:

• Thickening of the cervical mucus
• Inhibition of sperm

In studies, most users continued to ovulate.

Suitable for:

• Women of childbearing age (from the first menstrual period until the menopause)
• Women with or without children
• Women who want 5 years of protection but a lower hormone dose than Mirena

• 19.5 mg levonorgestrel
• Release: approx. 9 µg/day
• Duration of action: 5 years

Insertion by the gynecologist. A check-up takes place 4 to 6 weeks after insertion, then once a year. Kyleena is removed at the latest at the end of the fifth year. If you can no longer feel the removal threads, see your doctor and use an additional barrier method (e.g. condom) until the correct position of Kyleena has been confirmed. If unusual pain or bleeding occurs during or after insertion, an immediate medical examination is necessary.

Kyleena must not be inserted in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients
• Pregnancy
• Acute or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or conditions associated with an increased risk of pelvic infections
• Acute inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or of the vagina (vaginitis)
• Inflammation of the lining of the uterus after childbirth (postpartum endometritis) or septic abortion in the previous three months
• Existing cell changes of the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, CIN)
• Malignant disease of the uterus or cervix
• Progestogen-sensitive tumors, e.g. breast cancer
• Irregular bleeding from the uterus of unknown cause
• Congenital or acquired malformation of the uterus, including uterine fibroids, that would interfere with the insertion and/or correct position of Kyleena (i.e. if they distort the uterine cavity)
• Acute liver disease or liver tumor

Very common (at least 1 in 10 users): irregular bleeding and other changes to menstrual bleeding (heavier, lighter, less frequent, spotting or absence of bleeding), ovarian cysts, headache, abdominal or pelvic pain, acne or oily skin (seborrhoea), inflammation of the vagina and vulva (vulvovaginitis).

Common (1 to 10 in 100 users): depressed mood or depression, decreased libido, migraine, dizziness, nausea, hair loss, infections of the upper genital tract, painful menstruation, breast pain or breast discomfort, complete or partial expulsion of the IUD, vaginal discharge, weight gain.

Uncommon (1 to 10 in 1,000 users): increased body hair (hirsutism), perforation of the uterine wall (uterine perforation).

Hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, hives (urticaria) and swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema) have also been reported. During insertion or removal, pain, bleeding or a circulatory reaction (vasovagal reaction) with dizziness or fainting can occur, and in women with epilepsy also a seizure.

If a woman becomes pregnant while using Kyleena, the likelihood of a pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy) is increased. In extremely rare cases, a severe infection or blood poisoning (sepsis) can occur after insertion. If you experience mood swings or depressive symptoms, even shortly after insertion, contact your doctor.
