Jaydess

Jaydess is a small hormonal IUD from Bayer. It is smaller than Mirena and releases a lower dose of hormone.

The IUD works for 3 years and provides contraceptive protection while keeping systemic hormone exposure low.

Jaydess acts mainly locally:

• Thickening of the cervical mucus
• Inhibition of sperm
• Changes to the uterine lining

Ovulation is not suppressed in most women.

Especially suitable for:

• Women who want a low hormone dose
• Women who cannot tolerate estrogens

For women who have not yet given birth, Jaydess is not the first choice of contraception, as clinical experience is limited.

• 13.5 mg levonorgestrel
• Release: approx. 6 µg/day (lower than Mirena)
• Duration of action: 3 years

Inserted by a gynecologist, duration of action 3 years.

Jaydess must not be inserted in cases of:

• Hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients
• Pregnancy
• Acute or recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or conditions associated with an increased risk of pelvic infections
• Acute inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis) or of the vagina (vaginitis)
• Inflammation of the lining of the uterus after childbirth (postpartum endometritis) or septic abortion in the previous three months
• Existing cell changes of the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, CIN)
• Malignant disease of the uterus or cervix
• Progestogen-sensitive tumors, e.g. breast cancer
• Irregular bleeding from the uterus of unknown cause
• Congenital or acquired malformation of the uterus, including uterine fibroids, that would interfere with the insertion and/or retention of Jaydess (i.e. if they distort the uterine cavity)
• Acute liver disease or liver tumor

Similar to Mirena, but absent periods are less common. Common: irregular bleeding, ovarian cysts, headache.

Medicines that can speed up the breakdown of levonorgestrel:

• e.g. phenytoin, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin and possibly also oxcarbazepine, topiramate, felbamate, griseofulvin and medicines containing St John's wort
• The influence of these medicines on the contraceptive effect of Jaydess is not known. Because of the local mechanism of action, however, it is not assumed to be of major importance.

Medicines with a variable influence on the breakdown of levonorgestrel:

• Many HIV/HCV protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors can increase or decrease levonorgestrel levels in the blood when used at the same time

Medicines that can increase levonorgestrel levels:

• Strong and moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors, e.g. azole antifungals (fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole), verapamil, macrolide antibiotics (clarithromycin, erythromycin), diltiazem and grapefruit juice

MRI scan:

• Non-clinical tests have shown that an MRI scan can be performed safely with Jaydess in place under the following conditions: static magnetic field of no more than 3 tesla, spatial gradient field of no more than 720 gauss/cm. If the area examined is exactly at or relatively close to Jaydess, minor image artefacts may occur.
