What is ellaOne?
ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive ("morning-after pill") containing the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. It can prevent pregnancy up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sexual intercourse.
Compared with levonorgestrel products (such as PiDaNa), ellaOne has a longer window of effectiveness. Limited and inconclusive data suggest that its effectiveness may be reduced at higher body weight or body mass index (BMI). Regardless of body weight, ellaOne should be taken as soon as possible.
In Germany, ellaOne is available from pharmacies without a prescription.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Ulipristal acetate is a selective progesterone receptor modulator. It works mainly through:
Inhibition of ovulation: Ovulation is delayed or prevented – even if it is imminent. This is the most important mechanism of action.
Important:
- ellaOne does NOT work if ovulation has already occurred
- It is NOT an abortion pill
- An existing pregnancy is not terminated

How to take:
- As soon as possible after unprotected sex

- Your regular contraception can be resumed immediately
Contraindications
ellaOne should not be taken in case of:
- Existing pregnancy
- Severe liver disease
- Severe asthma treated with oral glucocorticoids
- Known allergy to ulipristal acetate

- Fatigue
After taking it:
- The timing of your next period may change
- Heavier or lighter bleeding possible
- Bleeding between periods may occur
Interactions
The effect may be reduced with:
- Enzyme inducers (St. John's wort, certain antiepileptic drugs)
ellaOne may reduce the effect of hormonal contraceptives (combined products and progestogen-only products). You can start or continue hormonal contraception after taking ellaOne, but you should also use a reliable barrier method (condom) until your next period.
