What is Zoely?
Zoely is a modern combination pill that differs from other pills in its active ingredients: it contains estradiol instead of the synthetic ethinylestradiol. Estradiol is identical to the body's own estrogen.
The progestin it contains, nomegestrol acetate, is modeled on natural progesterone. This combination is intended to enable particularly natural hormonal contraception.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action
Active ingredient: Nomegestrolacetat 2,5 mg, Estradiol 1,5 mg
Like other combination pills, Zoely works by:
- Inhibiting ovulation
- Thickening the cervical mucus
- Changing the lining of the uterus
The difference: the hormones used are more similar to the body's own than in classic pills.
Who is it suitable for?
Zoely may be suitable for women who:
- Want hormonal contraception that is as natural as possible
- Have tolerated other pills poorly

Contraindications
Do not use in case of:
- Existing or previous blood clots in the veins (e.g. deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism) or an increased risk of them (e.g. inherited or acquired clotting tendency, major surgery with prolonged immobilization, several risk factors combined)
- Existing or previous blood clots in the arteries (e.g. heart attack), existing or previous stroke, or their precursors (e.g. angina pectoris, TIA)
- Increased risk of blood clots in the arteries (e.g. inherited or acquired clotting tendency, diabetes with vascular disease, severe high blood pressure, severe lipid metabolism disorder, several risk factors combined)
- Migraine with accompanying neurological symptoms (focal neurological symptoms), including in the past
- Existing or previous inflammation of the pancreas with severely elevated triglycerides (blood fats)
- Breast cancer or other sex hormone-dependent malignant tumors (e.g. of the genital organs), including if suspected
- Liver diseases
- Existing or previous liver tumors (benign or malignant)
- Meningioma (tumor of the meninges), including in the past
- Unexplained bleeding
- Pregnancy
- Hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the other ingredients
Possible Side Effects
Very common:
- Acne (in studies more common than with a comparison pill containing drospirenone and ethinylestradiol)
Common:
- Headaches
- Weight gain
- Breast pain
Rare:
- Thromboses

No, on the contrary: with Zoely, acne can be a side effect. For skin problems, antiandrogenic pills (e.g., with dienogest or drospirenone) are more suitable.
