What is Viani mite?
Viani mite is a combination inhaler from GlaxoSmithKline that contains the long-acting beta-2 agonist salmeterol and the inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone propionate. It contains the same active ingredients as Seretide and is marketed under the brand name Viani in some regions.
The name "mite" stands for the low dose (50/100 µg), which is suitable for patients with mild to moderate asthma. Viani is also available in higher doses.
The inhaler is available as a Diskus (dry powder inhaler) and is inhaled 2x daily.

Who is it suitable for?
Viani mite is suitable for:
- Asthma in adults and children aged 4 years and older
- When ICS alone is not sufficient
- As maintenance therapy
Not suitable:
- As an emergency medication (salmeterol acts too slowly)
- For MART therapy
- As sole as-needed therapy
Important: Always keep a fast-acting reliever (salbutamol) on hand as well!

How to Take
Diskus: 1. Place your thumb on the thumb grip, open the Diskus (click) 2. Slide the lever back (the dose is loaded) 3. Breathe out deeply (not into the Diskus) 4. Close your lips tightly around the mouthpiece 5. Breathe in steadily and deeply 6. Hold your breath for 10 seconds 7. Close the Diskus 8. Rinse your mouth and spit out

- Regularly 2x daily
- Continue even when you have no symptoms
- Rinse your mouth after inhalation
Contraindications
Do not use in case of:
- Hypersensitivity to salmeterol, fluticasone or lactose
Use with caution in case of:
- Severe heart disease
- Overactive thyroid
- QT prolongation
- Diabetes mellitus
- Treatment with CYP3A4 inhibitors
Pregnancy: Only if clearly indicated.
Breastfeeding: Benefit-risk assessment.

Interactions:
- Ritonavir, cobicistat – increased fluticasone levels (avoid!)
- Beta blockers – can cancel out the effect of salmeterol
- CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole)
- QT-prolonging medications
