What is Symbicort?

Symbicort is a combination inhaler of AstraZeneca, which contains two active ingredients: the inhalative corticoid Budesonid and the long-acting bronchodilatator Formoterol. It is one of the most commonly prescribed asthma controllers worldwide.

Like Foster, Symbicort can be used in the MART concept both as basic therapy and as required. The turbuhaler is a powder inhaler that does not require coordination between spray and inhalation.

Symbicort is approved for Asthma and COPD.

Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Active ingredient: Budesonid, Formoterol

Symbicort has two complementary mechanisms:

Budesonide (corticoid):

  • Strong local anti-inflammatory effect
  • Reduces respiratory tract inflammation
  • Reduces mucus swelling
  • Reduces bronchial hyperreagiability

Formoterol (LABA):

  • Fast action (1-3 minutes)
  • Long-lasting bronchodilation (12 hours)
  • Relax the bronchial muscle
  • Improves lung function

Advantages of the combination:

  • Better asthma control as single active substances
  • Less asthmaexazerbations
  • MART-capable due to rapid action of formoterol

Who is it suitable for?

Symbicort is suitable for:

  • Adults and young people from 6 years old with asthma
  • If inhalative corticoid alone is not sufficient
  • As MART therapy
  • COPD in adults

Especially suitable for:

  • Moderate to heavy asthma
  • Common asthma attacks under monotherapy
  • Wish for an inhaler for everything (MART)

Not suitable:

  • In acute asthma attack as the only treatment
  • With mild, only occasional asthma
  • As sole reliever without basic therapy

Available Dosages

Symbicort Turbuhaler:

  • 80/4.5 μg (Budesonide/Formoterol)
  • 320/9 μ g

Symbicort Rapihaler (Dosieraerosol):

  • 80/4.5 μ g

Dosing at Asthma:

  • Maintenance therapy: 1-2 inhalations 2x daily
  • MART (only 160/4,5): 1 inhalation 2x daily + if required
  • Maximum for MART: 8 inhalations/day

For COPD:

  • 2 inhalations 2x daily

How to Take

Turbuhaler: 1. Protective cap off Two. Keep in mind 3. Turn handle first to the right, then turn left (click) 4. Breathe deep (not in the inhaler!) Five. Close the mouthpiece 6. Strong and deep breathing 7. Keep breath 10 seconds 8. rinse mouth after inhalation

Important notes:

  • Do not shake (powder inhaler)
  • Keep dry
  • Apply regularly, even without complaints
  • Always rinse your mouth (mouth soor prevention)

Contraindications

Do not apply at:

  • hypersensitivity to budesonide, formoterol or lactose

Preview at:

  • Active lung tuberculosis
  • Mushroom, virus or bacterial infections
  • Heavy cardiovascular diseases
  • thyroid hyperfunction
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hypokaliemia
  • osteoporosis

pregnant: Only with clear indication. Uncontrolled asthma is more dangerous for mother and child.

Possible Side Effects

Acid (1-10%):

  • Mundsoor
  • Heiserkeit
  • Headaches
  • Tremor
  • Heart palp

Occasionally:

  • Coughs
  • Muscle cramps
  • Unrest
  • nausea
  • Sleep disorders

Selten:

  • Systemic corticoid effects (for long-term high dose)
  • Paradox bronchospasmus
  • Changes in behaviour

Prevention: rinse the mouth after each inhalation and sprinkle.

Interactions

Preview at:

  • Beta blockers (also eye drops)
  • QT-extending medications
  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (Ketoconazole, Ritonavir)
  • Potassium sinking drugs

Not recommended:

  • Simultaneous application of other LABA
  • Non-selective beta blockers in asthma
