What is Microgynon?

Microgynon is one of the longest used and best investigated antibaby pills. It contains the active compound combination from the gestagen Levonorgestrel and the estrogen ethinylestradiol.

Levonorgestrel belongs to the second generation of gestagens and is considered one of the safest gestagens in terms of risk of thrombosis. Microgynon is often used as a reference preparation for comparative studies.

The Pearl index is about 0.1-0.9 when used correctly.

Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Active ingredient: Levonorgestrel 0,15 mg, Ethinylestradiol 0,03 mg

Microgynon works through the three classic mechanisms:

Ovulation inhibition: The hormones prevent ovulation by suppressing gonadotropin release.

Zervixschleim: Thickening of the cervical gland as barrier for sperm.

Endometrium: Change of cervical mucosa.

Levonorgestrel has no antiandrogenic effect – it therefore does not help against acne or excessive hair.

Who is it suitable for?

Microgynon is suitable for:
