What is Berodual?

Berodual is a combination inhaler of Boehringer Ingelheim, which contains two bronchial-extending active ingredients: beta-2-agonists Fenoterol and anticholinergic Ipratropium bromide.

The combination acts over two different mechanisms and is therefore more effective than any individual active substance alone. Berodual is frequently used in emergency intake in acute breathing, but can also be used for regular therapy.

Available as a dosing aerosol and as a solution for nebulisers.

Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Active ingredient: Fenoterol, Ipratropiumbromid

Berodual has two mechanisms:

Fenoterol (Beta-2-agonist):

  • Activates beta-2-receptors in bronchial muscles
  • Fast bronchodilation (3-5 minutes)
  • duration of action: 4-6 hours
  • inhibits mast cell release

Ipratropium bromide (anticholinergic):

  • Blocks muscarin receptors
  • Bronchodilatation (15-30 minutes admission)
  • duration of action: 4-6 hours
  • Reduced mucus secretion

Synergy effect: The two active ingredients complement each other: Fenoterol acts quickly, Ipratropium strengthens and extends the action. Together, they are more effective than the sum of the individual effects.

Who is it suitable for?

Berodual is suitable for:

  • Acute breathability in COPD
  • Asthma extracts
  • Demand therapy for obstructive respiratory diseases
  • Before diagnostic procedures (bronchoscopy)
