What is Formoterol?

Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2-agonist (LABA), which is used as a powder inhaler for continuous therapy of asthma and COPD. It is characterized by an unusually fast action that is noticeable after 1-3 minutes.

Unlike most LABA, Formoterol combines rapid action with long duration (12 hours). The monopreparation is used as a supplement to inhalative corticoids.

Known brand names are Formoterol STADA®, Bufori Easyhaler® and Oxis® Turbuhaler. Formoterol is also part of the combination inhalers Symbicort and Foster.

Active Ingredients & Mechanism of Action

Active ingredient: Formoterol

Formoterol activates the beta-2-receptors in the bronchi:

Active mechanism: 1. Binding to beta-2-adrenoceptors in bronchial muscles Two. Activates the adenylate cyclase and increases cAMP 3. The smooth musculature of the bronchis sleeps 4. The airways are extended

Special features:

  • Fast action (1-3 minutes) – unusual for LABA
  • Full intrinsic activity (fulagonistic)
  • duration of action: 12 hours
  • Lipophilic anchoring in the cell membrane

Additional effects:

  • Inhibition of mast cell release
  • Improving mucosiliary clearance
  • Protection against bronchoconstrictive stimuli

Who is it suitable for?

Formoterol mono preparations are suitable for:

  • Asthma from level 3 (always together with ICS!)
  • COPD continuous therapy
  • Prophylaxis of stress asthma

Important – safety note: Formoterol may be used with Asthma NIEMALS alone without inhalative corticoid (ICS). LABA monotherapy at asthma increases the risk of severe exacerbations.

Advantages of the monopreparation:

  • Flexible dosage independent of ICS
  • Fast action
  • Suitable for use before sports

Not suitable as:

  • Alone asthma therapy (without ICS!)
  • Acute treatment as the only measure
